This is Sex/body/shame talk you’ve never heard in church before. Paul builds to one simple point at the end of chapter 2: You cannot deal with the problem of your flesh by yourself. He’s writing to Jewish ascetics, but the point remains pretty starkly true to us (whether we’ve been raised in the reaches of the purity culture or not) because the thing is, God made us to be sexual. He loves that part of us. Pleasure is all there in the design. And shame (which according to the creation/fall account in genesis 2+3 was the original outworking of brokenness) is NEVER what he wants you to feel.
(Enjoy listening to this one in the privacy of your own car or home, rather than in a well lit school auditorium on a Sunday morning)
